The Cons of Art School
But as the age old saying goes, for every positive there is a negative. And when it comes to one’s own education-aka college- the statement couldn't be more true. In the article, No go to art school, the author, Grant Goodwine, a former art student who did not have the greatest of times while attending art school, goes to great lengths to state just how attending school art was one of the biggest mistakes of their life.
Throughout the article many cons are listed, one such being; the teachers. Through Mr. Grants experience, he describes his professors as being underqualified and unsuitable to teacher. Such a catastrophe could stem from how the teachers themselves view the art student as competition. Furthermore, personal goals are always at war with school works. Meaning more often than not, the students themselves will in a sense, murder their own unique styles in favor for obtaining a better grade. But the most nerve wracking con there is would have to be how there is no guarantee that one will even land a job even after obtaining an art degree from a credible college. Taking all this into account, one can easily assume as to why the author seems bitter about art institutions as a whole..
As was previously stated, money, well more like debt plays a huge roll in an upcoming art student’s future. The Mr. Goodwine even goes on to say, "Financially you (the art student) will scrape the bottom." Just as one would expect, student debt is a major issue that just cannot be ignored, but quite shockingly, favoritism spreads like wildfire within art institutions...How sad.
